Pool Facts & Safety

Fun facts, Arizona guidelines, and the safety info every pool owner needs to know.

Fun Pool Facts

Because knowing your pool is half the battle. The other half is keeping it clean โ€” that's where we come in.

๐ŸŒŠ

The average backyard pool holds about 20,000 gallons of water โ€” enough to fill over 300 bathtubs.

โ˜€๏ธ

In Lake Havasu City, pool water can reach 95ยฐF+ in summer โ€” basically a giant warm bath.

๐Ÿงช

Proper pool chemistry requires balancing 6 different chemical levels simultaneously. That's why CPO certification matters!

๐Ÿฆ

A single swimmer introduces about 0.14 grams of fecal matter into the pool. You're welcome for that image.

๐Ÿ’ง

Pools lose 25,000โ€“50,000 gallons of water per year to evaporation โ€” especially in Arizona heat.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ

The ideal pool temperature is 78โ€“82ยฐF. In Havasu summers, keeping it cool is actually the challenge.

๐ŸŠ

The first heated swimming pool was built in 1897 in Boston. Arizonans didn't need heated pools โ€” they needed cooled ones.

โš—๏ธ

Chlorine doesn't actually smell on its own โ€” that "pool smell" is chloramines, formed when chlorine reacts with sweat and other stuff. Keep it balanced!

๐Ÿธ

Frogs are attracted to pool lights at night. A pool cover can prevent surprise amphibian guests.

๐Ÿ”ต

Pool water appears blue because of light absorption โ€” not the chemicals or the paint. Science is cool.

Critical Safety Info

Child Drowning Prevention

In Arizona, drowning is the #1 cause of accidental death in children under 5. These tips save lives.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ

Designate a "Water Watcher" โ€” one adult whose only job is watching the pool. No phones, no distractions.

๐ŸŠ

Enroll children in swimming lessons as early as age 1. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends lessons starting at age 1.

๐Ÿ’Š

Keep a first aid kit and a phone poolside at all times.

๐Ÿฆบ

Life jackets (Coast Guard approved) for non-swimmers โ€” not floaties or arm bands.

๐Ÿšจ

Learn CPR. In Arizona, drowning is the #1 cause of accidental death in children under 5.

๐Ÿ”’

Double-check the gate every single time. It only takes 20โ€“30 seconds for a child to slip away.

In Case of Emergency

Call 911 immediately. Begin CPR if the child is unresponsive and not breathing. Do not leave the child to call for help โ€” send someone else. Every second counts.

Arizona Pool Guidelines

Arizona has some of the strictest pool safety laws in the country โ€” and for good reason. Here's what every pool owner needs to know.

Arizona Barrier Requirements (ARS ยง 36-1681)

  • All residential pools must be enclosed by a barrier at least 5 feet high.
  • Barriers must have no openings, handholds, or footholds that could allow a child under 5 to climb over.
  • Gates must be self-closing and self-latching, opening away from the pool.
  • The latch must be at least 54 inches from the ground, or on the pool side of the gate.
  • No direct access from the house to the pool without a barrier โ€” a door alarm is required if the house wall serves as part of the barrier.
  • Above-ground pools must have removable ladders or steps that are secured when not in use.

Drain & Suction Safety

  • Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act requires anti-entrapment drain covers on all public and residential pools.
  • Never allow children to sit on or play near pool drains โ€” suction entrapment can be fatal.
  • Inspect drain covers regularly for cracks or damage. Replace immediately if damaged.
  • Dual drain systems reduce suction risk significantly.
  • Know where your pool's emergency shutoff is and how to use it.

Chemical Safety

  • Never mix pool chemicals โ€” even "similar" chemicals can react violently.
  • Store chemicals in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from children and pets.
  • Always add chemicals to water, never water to chemicals.
  • Wear gloves and eye protection when handling pool chemicals.
  • Keep pH between 7.2โ€“7.8 and free chlorine between 1โ€“3 ppm.
  • Test water at least twice per week during peak season (daily in Havasu summers).

Heat & Sun Safety in Arizona

  • Pool decks in Arizona can reach 150ยฐF+ in direct sun โ€” always wear footwear on the deck.
  • Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen and reapply every 2 hours, even in the water.
  • Drink water constantly โ€” dehydration sneaks up fast when you're cooled by the pool.
  • Never swim alone, especially during extreme heat events (115ยฐF+).
  • Limit sun exposure between 10amโ€“4pm during summer months.
  • Watch for signs of heat exhaustion: dizziness, nausea, heavy sweating, rapid heartbeat.

Lake Havasu City additional requirements: The City of Lake Havasu City may have additional local ordinances beyond state law. Always check with the City of Lake Havasu City for the most current local requirements. Ool Pools can help you identify any compliance issues during a service visit.
